Lightning strikes!

On the morning of 27th July 2006, the local electricity substation was struck by lightning and destroyed in the fire and explosion that occured. As a result the local area lost all power for half a day. This was at an inconvenient time as I was about to get up, shaved, showered and go to work. It just goes to show how much we rely on electricity in our day to day lives:

  • Shower pump. Had to was hair in sink!
  • Boiler timer and ignition, so no hot water. Had to use what was left over from previous evening.
  • kettle. Had to use gas hob, but had to be lit with a match as the ignition was electric.
  • TV/Radio/Computers for travel news, so had to hope everything was OK when I got to the station.
  • Phones. As we have cordless phones, the base station was off and they wouldnt work. Had to use mobiles instead.

That was just for the early morning routine!

The juice was back on by mid afternoon an on arriving home I saw that it was being supplied by a large generator on a lorry. So I guess they’ve not fixed the substation yet. I’m expecting it to go off again sometime soon when they replace the substation bits and cut over to the proper supply.
